The river Ouzel at Stoke Hammond looked idyllic for the return interclub match between LGCAA and Leighton Buzzard.  Sadly the first frost of winter, bright sunny skies, low water levels and only gentle flow combined to spoil the day. Leighton Buzzard opted to hold the match on sections C/D of the river which normally produce good bags of fish this time of year, but bites were at a premium with almost half of the field failing to catch.

The first interclub match of the season for Letchworth Garden City Angling Association was held on the river Ouse at Felmersham, with the guest coming from Leighton Buzzard.
Little rain had fallen over the last few weeks which allowed the river to flow, slow and clear. Vegetation growth in the river was still high which put a few pegs out of action but a nice sunny day made for a pleasant day out.

Twelve anglers turned for the Sunday league match at Poppyhill which was held on the Canal lake. As the temperature rose with a very light breeze the anticipation increased to see who would pull the much favoured peg 26, but the match ended with pegs 24, 12 and 8 being the best.

7 Anglers turned up for the clubs first outing on the river Ouse at Felmersham.

After several weeks of low rainfall the river was down nearly a foot and running slow and clear. The temperatures rose during the day but were tempered by the constant wind blowing down the river which gave anglers using the pole at full length a problem with presentation.

Some very good catches of fish coming from the Poppy Hill Complex at the moment, so if you're not fishing it, you're missing out on some great sport!
Multiple catches of carp (10+ fish) being taken with fish to over 20lb from Lake 2; and fish to high doubles from Lake 1. Pike to over 20lb still putting in an appearance on Lake 1.
Canal also fishing well to pleasure anglers with 30lb+ bags being had.
Jubilee lake threw up a nice Crucian Carp estimated at 2.5lb+ as well as lots of silvers last week.

This sunday was our last club match of the season. A good turnout and the prospect of some good sport due to the fine weather promised a fitting end to a successful match season. But as with most matches on the Canal at Poppy Hill,  the fish didn't want to cooperate and for most anglers it was a struggle. Nether the less nearly everyone caught something and it was a very pleasant day.

After weeks of wind and rain it was pleasing to fish in bright sunshine with only a gentle breeze. The down side of the super weather was the very high canal towpath activity with joggers, cycles and walkers out in large numbers. There was plenty of evidence of the recent storms through floating debris. All who took part caught had plenty of fish although in some areas they were very small.

A good turn out at our club match on the canal this Sunday, including a rare and welcome appearance of our fisheries manager Lenny. The good weather probably being the main attraction for many, but despite being a pleasant day fishing was a bit patchy as you would expect this time of year. The fish appeared to be shoaling up and feeding for very short periods, but despite this most caught something.

Gin clear water and bright sunshine on winter's day often mean difficult fishing and so it was today as not a bite was seen on the Ivel bank side of the lake!
The top weight came from peg 21 as the far end of the arm.  Ray Sparks was the angler fortunate to draw where rudd and roach were shoaled-up.  He mainly used a pole rig to present pinkie hook bait and put 3lbs 11ozs on the scales.
Tony Pearce took second place from peg one close to the aerator; again pinkies were on the hook. Tony had employed a waggler rig to fish close in and managed 2lbs 1oz of small roach - the ("why is peg being used?") moans ceased!
From the middle of the arm Dick Sayers fished punched bread to tempt 1lb 10ozs of roach for third spot - Dick reported a blank hour plus at the start and if he put anything other than bread on the hook his float never dipped.
The only other rod to top the one pound mark was Dennis Smith who fished his favourite 'wag & mag' tactics to catch rudd on the drop.

1st  - 21 Ray Sparks 3lb 11oz
2nd - 1 Tony Pearce 2lb 1oz
3rd - 22 Dick Sayers 1lb 10.5oz
4th - 4 Dennis Smith 1lb 0.5oz

Last Sundays club match saw 9 anglers on the Ouse at Felmersham with a mild overcast day and a fair flow. The prospects looked good for most and the river didn't disappoint with four weights around the 10lb mark with the top weight of 10lb 9oz going to Kev Farrow, Roach being the main quarry.

Second place with 10lb 2oz of small Roach and Perch was Ken Kendall fishing mainly pinkie.

Third place went to Felmersham regular Dennis Smith with a close 10lb 1oz making the best of a poor draw.

1st - 8 Kev Farrow 10lb 9oz
2nd - 6 Ken Kendall 10lb 2oz

Eight anglers turned out this Sunday match to brave the so called storms on the Ivel at Broom. It was a bit blowy but hardly a storm. Weed was more of a problem for some, making it difficult to get a clean trot through the swims and the leaf debris didn't help much either. However most caught with some nice perch showing. Sundays match on the River Cam at Clayhithe saw a poor turnout, probably due to rumours about pollution related fish deaths on the Cam. We do however believe that these rumours could have been untrue and the problems were infact due to low oxygen levels. The Environement Agency responded swiftly to prevent the problem getting any worse.

As it turned out there were plenty of fish showing and the 4 anglers who attended managed the typical River Cam weights.

We are pleased to announce progress has been achieved in getting the shared access track leading to Poppy Hill repaired.

Commencing this coming Monday (8th/9th July ), Central Beds Council will be repairing and re-surfacing the sections in front of Champneys Health Spa and down to the bridge over the River Ivel.

Work is expected to last for 2 days and during this time access to and from Poppy Hill is expected to be either severely restricted or closed entirely. Our advice would be to avoid traveling to the lakes on those days and to have left the site Sunday evening unless you are staying until wednesday.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but we hope you will agree this will benefit all track users in the long term.

Well that's another season just about done. The final Workparty next Sunday will be spent finishing up all the odds and ends around the site. As it is also a bank holiday weekend the fisheries management team have decided to keep the whole site open and just work round those fishing.

Just a quick thanks to the lads who have attended over the last two months. Without your help it would be very difficult to achieve all those tasks, and hope to see you all next Friday evening.

For those who have not been lending a hand. Poppy Hill wil close on Thursday 30th May at 6pm. Please ensure you have left the site before then as the gate will be locked. This year the site will re-open to 2013/14 season book holders at 12pm Saturday 8th June. Please do not occupy any swims before this..

To finally wrap up the season the final results from this seasons Sunday league are out. This year it was a close run thing between the top six anglers, in fact the top 3, Mike Clarke, Ken Kendall and Clive Robinson all drew with the same amount of points and a count back on weights had to be done to determine the overall winner.

As at the tail end of winter in previous years the small fish in Lake Two were shoaled tightly together at the car park end. The outcome of the match was very much more due to the draw for swims than what the anglers did!
At peg 1 Steve Mayes took full advantage of the fancied spot taking a winning weight of 24lbs 14ozs. Steve chose to fish a waggler and maggot rig over ground bait and micro pellets to take a super bag dominated by skimmer bream.
Ken Kendall's second placed return of 12lbs 12ozs was mostly small rudd with a few roach and small skimmers. Ken fished the pole towards the island at peg 3 with a single red maggot on the hook while feeding casters and groundbait through a toss pot.
On the opposite side of the bay to the winner Kevin Farrow claimed third place with an 8lbs 8ozs net of small rudd and roach.

A season's top match weight of 74lbs 1oz fell to Alec Davis on Crabtree Lake at Lawn Farm.

Drawn on the most sheltered part of the lake, Alec plumbed up and found a small shelf at about 10 meters, the only variation to an otherwise flat lake bed. It was here that he carefully fed a tiny handful of casters and pellets not expecting the response that followed as at first a 12lb 12 oz carp and then a 10lb 9 oz one were brought to the net. To these Alec added a number of smaller carp, chub and roach all of which fell to a red maggot and pinkie cocktail on the hook.

On the opposite side of the lake Toby Bird went all out for carp fishing a pellet hook bait while feeding pellet at 13 meters; he was rewarded with a total of 38lbs 10ozs. At the next peg Clive Robinson completed the frame with 32lbs 10zs made up of carp, chub and skimmers taken on either maggot or sweet corn.

Ice in the car park and in the margins warned that bites might be hard to tempt for the dozen who turned out to fish the annual pairs contest. In the first two hours almost all of the bites came at the first couple of pegs closest to the aerator.
Rich Farrow made the most of peg 2 where fish were seen "topping". Skimmers, roach, rudd & perch made up a winning return of 5lb 4ozs. Rich pole fished maggot to the lily pads and the far shelf. The weight was enough to win the pairs although his partner Rich Goodwin contributed a massive half an ounce!
Second best was Dave Batcheldor with a bream and four skimmers for 3lbs 7ozs.from peg 21. Single red maggot presented over a bed of ground bait was the method with most of the fish coming in the last hour.

Pegs were squeezed between boats moored on the tow path for this match.  Despite the lake of room the quality of the fishing made the effort worthwhile with the lowest weight being a creditable 4lbs.

Bites were plentiful but those who found the big perch topped the result list.  Leading the way was Toby Bird with a total of 11lbs 11ozs.  Toby was able to fish close to the barges hitched to the far bank and his net included skimmers, roach and three big perch tempted by worm on the hook.
